An old photo. ^Obsidian-Fox requested that I submit it, as it is one of his self-proclaimed favorite portraits.
The model is and editor: is =JackSilver . Lucky for me, he is also my love :giggle:

And now for my usual rant:
=JackSilver and I took this quite some time ago, when we had just begun to live together I believe. We both compiled snazzy vintage outfits. At the time, I had no idea why Matthew had created an outfit. The only other time I had ever touched one of his cameras, he snapped at me like a rabid dog. He hehe. Now he lets me play with his Hasselblad to create fun images like [link] and [link] two other pieces I should probably submit. Hooray for trust development :w00t:
I remember Matthew goofing around trying to find the right pose, he sort of brushed by this one, and I made him go back. At this moment in time, I believe this was the truth of Superstar Matty B. (=JackSilver). Sad, introspective, and in dire need of a constructive emotional outlet. At least, from my perspective as some sort of creative arts therapist I saw this.
After all, the chosen title is "Sorrow and Loss."

How brave is it for someone to put these emotions out there? Even if it was a small fraction of a fumble of poses, such moments define the time periods of our lives.
It is the way we move past these moments that really define our being in the world.

Can we recycle our sorrow to the earth with tears?
Or does one grin and bare it, ignoring the advantage of the experience?

I think that with every loss, there is an equal part gained. Perhaps one is able to embrace (and depict) authentic sorrow for the first time? Perhaps another door opens, allowing you to move down a new hallway full of possibility....or a new room even!
Expression is such a powerful form of realization.

If this is at all confusing....I am just realizing the therapeutic power of photographs as a holding device.

Oh dear, look how far you have come...

I am so proud of you, and everything you have experienced to make it this far. So real, and full of truth.
If only every moment could be so full of life.

Sorrow and Loss by ~cmulcahy This is hands down my favorite portrait on all of deviantART. Its been in the models gallery for quite some time, so i suggested that the photographer upload it to her gallery so i could give it the recognition it deserves! As an extra bonus, today is International Women's Day, so what better time to feature this superb shot by an amazing photographer! ( Featured by `straightfromcamera )

Don't you hate it when you know you should say something, but you can't even begin to express your thoughts? All I can't muster up is 'WOW!!!', but this picture deserves more and I don't know what to say.

Two things...

okay, I lied.

Three things.

1. I think it's funny you said this exact sentence, since the back of my business card says, "I like your face."

2. You are entitled to your opinions. Doesn't mean that they are worth anything though. They call it "two cents worth" for a reason... though, it makes me wonder why someone inquiring only offers a penny for one's thoughts.

3. Obsidian-fox... shame on you for defending me. I appreciate it... but can defend myself. I don't particularly find it offensive it all. I don't have experience modeling.

If the viewer doesn't want to transcend that paradigm, that the hot model poses perfectly, and see that there's an underlying emotion attached to the image...thats fine with me.

Traditionally, if you have nothing nice to say, don't say it.

Personally, I think his face is distinguished, that of a thinker, someone with a lot to say, write, or feel..

It would be appreciated that you keep negative comments about models to a minimum, as some may construe it as harassment.

Isn't one of the points of posting your work on DA to get criticism? What I said was not a negative comment about the looks of the author, but mere criticism of the photograph, and I do not appreciate your attempts at inserting words in my mouth.

The point of posting is to get CRITIQUE, not criticism...

You said you didnt like his face, thats nothing that has to do with the photo, it is a jab at the model.

crit·i·cism Listen to the pronunciation of criticism
Pronunciation:
\ˈkri-tə-ˌsi-zəm\
Function:
noun
Date:

1 a: the act of criticizing usually unfavorably <seeking encouragement rather than criticism> b: a critical observation or remark <an unfair criticism> c: critique2: the art of evaluating or analyzing works of art or literature; also : writings expressing such evaluation or analysis <an anthology of literary criticism>3: the scientific investigation of literary documents (as the Bible) in regard to such matters as origin, text, composition, or history

The look of/on his face has nothing to with the model except for how he chose to position his head (assuming he is the one who chose to position his head is such an unflattering manner). He has an expression on his face that is not fitting to the photo at all, and like I said, his head is positioned in quite the unflattering manner that makes it look like he hasn't a neck! He is also staring at the camera, which doesn't seem fitting for this photo and does not go well with the rest of his positioning.

love the color, makes me think of those rare clasic looking photos that you just want to hang on the wall where everyone can admire it.

'Tis beautiful.
